SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Labor Relations Manager is responsible for promoting a positive, compliant, and respectful workplace across the APL Maritime, Ltd. (AML) fleet and shoreside operations. This role oversees cadet placement, grievance resolution, workforce development, and implementation of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment (SASH) and Every Mariner Builds A Respectful Culture (EMBARC) policies, while serving as a liaison to regulatory and industry partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • A dhere to AML’s Integrated Management System (IMS), ensuring all duties align with company policies on safety, security, environmental protection, and ethics.
  • Serve as the Designated Employer Representative (DER) under the Company’s Drug and Alcohol Policy.
  • Act as AML’s primary point of contact for Sexual Assault/Sexual Harassment (SASH) matters, ensuring compliance with EMBARC standards.
  • Maintain relationships with MARAD, USMMA, USCG, and other industry stakeholders to align SASH prevention efforts.
  • Conduct audits, review reporting protocols, update training materials, and ensure timely correction of non-conformities.
  • Foster a respectful and supportive environment for cadets, including periodic onboard check-ins and records management.
  • Coordinate cadet assignments aboard company-managed vessels in collaboration with academies and internal departments.
  • Manage onboarding documentation, credential verification, and compliance with MARAD, USCG, and academy requirements.
  • Oversee and maintain the company’s Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with U.S. maritime academies, ensuring adherence to agreed terms and regular review.
  • Support shipboard leadership in mentoring cadets and resolving training-related issues.
  • Maintain cadet training records and integrate cadet programs into long-term workforce planning.
  • Investigate, track, and respond to union grievances in partnership with the Director of Labor Relations.
  • Respond to, review, and track crew corrective and disciplinary actions, ensuring documentation is complete, consistent, and aligned with company policy.
  • Ensure AML leadership is informed of all exceptional labor relations matters.
  • Collaborate with vessel staff and union representatives to gather facts, ensure CBA compliance, and resolve disputes.
  • Prepare documentation for arbitration and support broader labor strategy through grievance trend analysis.
  • Maintain AML’s computer-based training (CBT) and evaluation platforms in accordance with IMS procedures.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Labor Relations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 10 to 15 years of documented success in the Maritime industry, preferably for a US Flag Operations, required.
  • Two to five years prior work experience directly related to the crewing of ships or vessel operations.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Fluent in English.
  • Experience as a shipboard officer.
  • Experience in a union environment is required.
  • Working knowledge of Coast Guard regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and vessel operations required.
  • Strong computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products required.
