Staff Accountant
The Staff Accountant plays a key role in the monthly close and financial reporting process. This role is responsible for preparing, analyzing, and explaining financial results with a focus on the general ledger, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Staff Accountant will own assigned close areas, prepare review-ready support, and communicate financial insights clearly to management. This position is located in our beautiful office at I-35 and Mockingbird where you will be a part of a collaborative and fun team.
Position Responsibilities
- Independently execute assigned areas of the monthly close, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and accrual schedules.
- Prepare and maintain general ledger accounts, ensuring balances are accurate, supported, and clearly explained.
- Analyze month-over-month and year-over-year fluctuations and communicate drivers of variances.
- Prepare audit-ready and reviewer-ready supporting documentation.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements and management reporting packages.
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
- Meet all processing and reporting deadlines.
- Use Excel to build clear, formula-driven schedules and reconciliations (no manual math).
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and consistency in financial reporting processes.
- Assist with system enhancements, reporting improvements, and special projects.
- Research and respond to financial inquiries from management with clear explanations and support.
- Collaborate with the accounting team to support cross-functional needs as required.
Routine Responsibilities
In addition to monthly close and reporting activities, the Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of assigned accounting areas including:
- Monitor and timely resolve reconciling items and aged balances.
- Maintain rollforward schedules (e.g., accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets) and understanding cross-period impacts.
- Ensure recurring schedules and reconciliations remain current, consistent, and properly supported month-over- month.
- Follow established close checklists, review protocols, and internal control standards.
- Proactively identify and escalate accounting issues, risks, or unusual activity identified during the close process.
- Maintain clear, standardized documentation to support continuity and knowledge transfer within the accounting team.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- 3+ years of professional accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial statements.
- Ability to exercise accounting judgment and explain financial impacts.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required, including proficiency in VLOOKUP functions and PivotTables for data analysis and reporting.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a close-driven environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with Aspire and/or Acumatica financial software is a plus.
