POSITION SUMMARY:
Overland Corporation is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Asphalt Roadway Density Technician to support asphalt paving operations across Oklahoma and North Texas. This position is responsible for performing field compaction (density) testing on roadway projects in accordance with TxDOT and ODOT specifications while assisting crews in maintaining quality standards and safe traffic control operations.
This role requires a TxDOT 1B Asphalt Certification; however, training may be provided for strong candidates. Overland will also provide training for the ATSSA Traffic Control Technician certification if needed.
JOB DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:
- Perform asphalt field density testing using nuclear gauges or approved alternative methods following TxDOT 1B and ODOT specifications.
- Document and report daily density results including stationing, test locations, equipment identification, and compliance notes.
- Communicate testing results promptly to paving foremen, superintendents, project managers, and quality control leadership.
- Verify compliance with all applicable agency specifications, project requirements, and Overland quality standards.
- Operate, maintain, transport, and properly secure nuclear density gauges and testing equipment.
- Assist with roadway traffic control operations including flagging, signage placement, and work zone setup/removal.
- Support rolling pattern evaluations and recommend compaction adjustments as needed.
- Maintain accurate and organized field documentation for Texas and Oklahoma paving projects.
- Assist with asphalt production testing and additional quality control activities as assigned.
- Follow all company, TxDOT, ODOT, and OSHA safety procedures and requirements.
- Participate in daily safety meetings and weekly toolbox talks.
- Perform additional duties on paving sites as assigned.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with positive driving history.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Understanding of asphalt paving operations and roadway density testing procedures preferred.
- Knowledge of TxDOT and/or ODOT hot mix asphalt testing procedures preferred.
- Ability to operate testing equipment and maintain accurate documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with field personnel and supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- TxDOT 1B Asphalt Certification required (training may be provided for the right candidate).
- Experience with roadway density testing or asphalt quality control preferred.
- ATSSA Traffic Control Technician certification preferred or willingness to obtain through company-provided training.
- Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends as project schedules require.
- Ability to travel and work out of town when required.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, dependability, and professionalism required.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Comfortable working outdoors in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to safely climb on and off heavy equipment.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and boots.
- Travel within Oklahoma and North Texas is required. Per diem provided for projects outside the hired working area.
