Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.Role Purpose
As a Senior Process Design Technician focused on component and equipment design, you will collaborate closely with engineers to create robust, innovative mechanical component and equipment solutions that support manufacturing process advancements. You will play a pivotal role in the design, evaluation, and implementation of custom parts and equipment systems, applying your technical expertise to ensure manufacturable, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
- Lead or support the design and development of components, fixtures, and manufacturing equipment used in process validation and production environments.
- Partner with engineers to perform detailed experiments, analyze data, compile technical reports, and iterate on designs for optimized performance and manufacturability.
- Document and communicate engineering learnings, enabling seamless knowledge and product transfer into manufacturing by providing clear design documentation and training.
- Drive and support prototype equipment and fixture development, including mechanical layout, CAD modeling, build supervision, and hands-on assembly/evaluation in the lab.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with project teams to conceptualize, design, model (CAD), and validate new components, tools, and assembly equipment required for advanced process solutions.
- Engage with internal and external experts to identify new component and equipment technologies, assess technical feasibility, and integrate best practices into your designs.
- Work cross-functionally with global manufacturing and engineering partners to evaluate, refine, and implement proposed components and equipment designs into production.
- Lead or support hands-on configuration, modification, and troubleshooting of lab-based and prototype equipment and fixturing.
- Execute experimental setups for mechanical apparatus and measurement systems, collect and analyze test data, and provide thorough design and process test reports.
- Develop and maintain clear, detailed component drawings, bills of materials, and equipment manuals to support manufacturing implementation and maintenance.
- Participate in the design, build, and iterative improvement of custom fixtures, tools, and test equipment based on process feedback and performance data.
- Assist in creating and updating product and process documentation, including maintenance and assembly instructions for equipment.
- Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action efforts related to equipment and component issues in manufacturing and customer environments.
- Maintain rigorous safety standards and contribute to ongoing EHS improvements in all design and hands-on work.
Travel Requirements:
- Approximately 15%, including international travel, for equipment installation, training, or project support.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Associate degree in a technical discipline or military equivalent OR
- 2+ years’ experience in an experimental laboratory or manufacturing environment, with significant hands-on and/or design/CAD exposure.
- Demonstrated experience with mechanical component and equipment design, including GD&T and tolerancing.
- CAD proficiency (SolidWorks and/or Creo preferred) for designing components, tooling, and complex assemblies.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and “hands-on” skills for rapid prototyping, component assembly, and equipment troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with a range of mechanical and measurement tools (calipers, drills, etc.).
- Strong project teamwork, communication, and documentation skills within cross-functional, multi-site/global teams.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Experience in manufacturing equipment or custom fixture design for production.
- Knowledge of process validation, SPC/data analysis tools (Excel, JMP, Minitab).
- Practical judgment and analytical thinking to balance performance, cost, and manufacturability.

The range for this position is $72,744.00 - $100,023.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
