Summary

The Department of School of Health Professions is currently seeking an Assistant Professor.

The Associate Program Director of Experiential Learning of the Physician Assistant Program, a Physician Assistant licensed to practice in the State of Texas, participates in the organization, administration, planning, and evaluation of the 30-month program leading to the Master of Science degree. The core and specific administrative, instructional management, evaluation, research, and service duties of the position are listed below.

Job Duties

Core Faculty Responsibilities [.60]: As a core faculty member of the Physician Assistant Program, the Associate Program Director will participate in all the following activities in the routine course of his/or her duties:

  • Serve as a student advisor providing guidance and mentorship in all phases of training regarding their academic performance and professional development.
  • Serve as a secondary mentor and, where appropriate primary mentor for students working to fulfill the Master's Paper requirement.
  • Develop and deliver lecture, laboratory, and small group interactive sessions based on program needs and individual faculty experience and expertise.
  • Participate in routine testing of PA student competencies including the roles of item writer, test reviewer, skills grader, and skills test writer.
  • Screen and evaluate candidates for admission to the PA Program.
  • Participate in periodic self-study activities required to maintain Program accreditation.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities to maintain clinical competence, licensure, and to improve personal skills as an educator and a clinician.

Research: The responsibilities of the Associate Program Director related to scholarship include the following:

  • Participate in research activities in collaboration with other Baylor faculty members.
  • Participate in grant proposal development seeking funds to support development projects.
  • Make scholarly contributions to the physician assistant and/or other health-related literature.

Service: Along with the above responsibilities, it is expected that the Associate Program Director will:

  • Provide service to the College as requested, i.e. committee and task force assignments.
  • Provide clinical service as appropriate to expertise, experience, and time availability.
  • Participate in the activities of local, state, and national professional organizations.

Associate Program Director/Clinical Coordinator Responsibilities [.40]:

Administration: The following administrative duties are expected to be carried out by the Associate Program Director:

  • Provide yearly clinical year orientation to students.
  • Assist in the supervision of faculty and staff in the day-to-day operation of the Physician Assistant Program.
  • Coordinate activities of the Program in absence of the Program Director.
  • Maintain administrative files regarding curriculum, students, and other program activities.
  • Provide guidance and referral services to PA students regarding academic matters, including remediation plans.
  • Present students to promotions committee, as needed.
  • Present curriculum items to committee, as needed, for approval.
  • Participate in the annual White Coat Ceremony.
  • Conduct Faculty Hour sessions each call back day during the clinical year.

Instructional Management: The responsibilities of the Associate Program Director related to curriculum and instruction include the following:

  • Coordinate with administrative staff, on site coordinators, course directors, rotation directors, room reservations, AV, Career Development Center, and simulation lab for the clinical year the scheduling of all content in the clinical phase of the curriculum.
  • Coordinate with ASC to develop process for student referral, peer tutoring, and delivery of class wide student support, if needed, in the clinical year of the program.
  • Coordinate Emotional Intelligence seminar series in the clinical year of the program.
  • Coordinate with administrative staff for the clinical year the preparation of memos, letters, schedules, testing periods, course evaluations, thank you notes, and reports.
  • Work with rotation and course directors to regularly review rotations and supervise revisions and updating of syllabi, Blackboard, rotation objectives, content, and exams for all clinical year rotations and courses. Ensure follow-through on needed course and rotation changes.
  • Serve as Course Director and/or rotation director for assigned rotations.
  • Work with didactic phase team to schedule activities to orient students to the clinical phase.
  • Oversee the reporting of interim and final grades during the clinical phase of the curriculum.

Evaluation: The evaluation functions of the Associate Program Director include the following:

  • Evaluate clinical curriculum against national standards of Physician Assistant practice on an annual basis and prepare reports as needed.
  • Organize, attend and evaluate clinical rotation site visits for purposes of quality control and evaluation as needed.
  • Oversee administration of standardized exams used throughout the clinical phase.
  • Review of annual PACKRAT, PANCE and other data for reporting and accreditation purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education (Required): master’s degree or higher from an accredited physician assistant program in the United States.
  • Experience (Required): Prior clinical experience (minimum three years); prior full-time teaching experience in an accredited PA Program in the United States (minimum three years).
  • Certification/Licenses/Registration (Required): Current NCCPA certification, Texas licensure.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Collaboration skills to work with those from other schools and departments.
  • Efficiency of work, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Maintain confidentiality, including from core faculty, regarding sensitive program or student matters.
  • Familiarity with institutional procedures.
