Generator Technician
Our client is seeking a skilled Generator Technician to join their dynamic team and support a variety of projects across multiple locations in the continental United States. This role offers the opportunity to work independently on a range of diesel electric generating equipment, performing maintenance, repairs, and modifications on high-capacity generators and related systems. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance, repairs, and modifications on diesel engine-driven electric generators (750-2250kw) and related equipment from leading manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Generac, Trane, Kohler, and Carrier.
- Service and troubleshoot motors, electronic controls, programmable logic circuits (PLCs), graphical user interfaces (GUIs), and high-voltage equipment.
- Transport equipment, tools, and fluids to and from work sites; operate and maintain tools and safety devices as required.
- Coordinate and schedule preventive maintenance (PM) and repairs in accordance with manufacturer standards and company procedures.
- Obtain necessary approvals and documentation for maintenance activities.
- Conduct inspections, load bank testing, and system modifications, including installation of pre-heaters, battery chargers, and fuel systems.
- Diagnose and resolve issues with diesel standby and transfer switch systems, including wiring modifications and troubleshooting.
- Document all repairs, maintenance activities, and system modifications accurately.
- Respond promptly to emergency service calls and provide clear communication regarding work requirements to management.
- Collaborate with business development to assess generator opportunities and potential subcontractors and assist with bid responses.
- Stay current with industry standards, generator requirements, and best practices.
- Travel 50-75% of the time to various project sites within the continental US; all travel expenses are covered by company.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in generator preventive maintenance.
- At least 3 years of experience working with generator units rated 1500 kW or higher.
- At least 3 years of experience working in compliance with NFPA 70E and NFPA 110 standards.
- 30-Hour OSHA Certification preferred
- Valid driver's license.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Good understanding of mechanical and electrical systems in large facilities.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work independently.
- Physical ability to use hand tools, lift/carry up to 50 lbs., and work on ladders or step stools.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions as required.
