Position Overview:
The organization is seeking a Director of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) to lead its comprehensive safety and environmental compliance program. This hands-on leadership role combines strategic direction with active field presence to drive safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, minimize risk, and foster continuous improvement across operations, fleets, terminals, and facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Environmental, Health, and Safety department, including building and developing a high-performing team with clear roles and expectations.
- Serve as a proactive self-starter who drives EHS initiatives to achieve zero-incident goals, regulatory excellence, and operational efficiency.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve company-wide EHS policies aligned with federal (OSHA, EPA, DOT, USCG), state (TCEQ), and local regulations, particularly related to hazardous materials transportation, fuel storage, emissions, spill prevention, and waste management.
- Conduct regular site inspections, facility audits, vehicle inspections, environmental compliance checks, and safety assessments across terminals and field operations.
- Provide hands-on training and coaching to drivers, terminal staff, and operations teams on compliance, hazard recognition, safe handling of fuels/lubricants, and emergency response.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, corrective actions, and follow-up to prevent recurrence.
- Track and analyze EHS metrics, audit findings, training completion, incident trends, and environmental performance to drive accountability and strategic decision-making.
- Ensure daily compliance with DOT hazardous materials regulations, OSHA workplace safety standards, and TCEQ requirements related to petroleum storage tanks, air permitting, spill prevention, and emissions.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans, spill prevention/countermeasure plans (SPCC), and preparedness programs; coordinate drills and response activities.
- Manage environmental programs including hazardous waste handling, storage tank compliance, permitting, emissions monitoring, and sustainability initiatives.
- Support insurance claims, regulatory inspections, and legal interactions through thorough documentation and compliance records.
- Foster a strong, visible culture of safety and environmental stewardship through field engagement, safety meetings, toolbox talks, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives to support company growth and best practices adoption.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in EHS leadership, particularly within fleet operations, hazmat transportation, fuel/petroleum distribution, or related industries.
- Strong working knowledge of DOT hazardous materials transportation regulations (required), OSHA standards, and TCEQ environmental regulations (preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, drive cultural change, and push initiatives forward in fast-paced operational environments.
- Hands-on, “boots on the ground” leadership style with comfort in field work and independent decision-making.
- Experience conducting inspections, incident reviews, root cause analysis, training delivery, and regulatory interactions.
- Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Background working with insurance providers, legal teams, and regulatory agencies on audits and compliance matters.
- Experience managing EHS programs for fleets and operational teams of varying sizes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Director of Safety (CDS) or equivalent certification preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Additional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CHMM, or TCEQ-related credentials are a plus.
