FUNCTION

This is a faculty position who reports to the Chair, Department of Interventional Radiology, who reports to the Head, Division of Diagnostic Imaging. The primary location to practice will be at one of the outlying MD Anderson Houston Area Locations (HALs) with rotations to the main campus.

SCOPE

Interventional Radiology Is An Administrative Unit That Provides Comprehensive Image Guided Interventions As Well As Selected Non-invasive Diagnostic Services Using The Various Imaging Modalities Currently Available. In The Discharge Of The Institution's Mission, Members Of The Department Provide

  • excellent, comprehensive and compassionate care for the patients who have or may have

cancer

  • Image guided interventions in a cost-effective environment;
  • programs and projects conducted to advance fundamental or clinical understanding of cancer
  • education for medical students, residents, fellows and pre- and post-graduate scientists; and
  • interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to patient-centered clinical care, research and exceptional education.

The members of the Interventional Radiology Department are appointed upon the recommendation of the Department Chair, and report to the Chair for day-to-day operations. Under the direction of the Chair, members are responsible for high standards in clinical care, research and education. These responsibilities require the ability to reason deductively, act decisively, communicate verbally and in writing with a wide variety of persons, interact with highly sophisticated technology and understand complicated and comprehensive concepts, technologies and documents.

Key Functions

The Department of Interventional Radiology is seeking candidates for a clinical faculty appointment due to growth of our procedure volumes and facilities. The final rank of this appointment will be commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications. The clinical practice of the Department of Interventional Radiology encompasses a broad scope of image-guided interventions and therapies, with a particular focus on Interventional Oncology.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has experienced substantial growth, with coverage spanning a large geographical region in and around the greater Houston metropolitan area and serving a population of over seven million people. Since the opening of the Houston Area Locations (HALS) in West Houston and The Woodlands over six years ago, the Department of Interventional Radiology has become an integral part of the multidisciplinary teams at these locations and has continued to experience year-over-year growth.

This HALS faculty position will include a substantial portion of clinical time at The Woodlands, while maintaining full integration within the Department of Interventional Radiology and an academic appointment at the main campus. The selected candidate may also be asked to spend clinical time at other existing (West Houston) or future HALs if needed. The selected candidate will also have dedicated clinical time at the Texas Medical Center, in addition to call responsibilities. This individual will become part of a multidisciplinary team made up of medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists dedicated to excellence in cancer care. Faculty in these positions will engage in a variety of clinical and academic responsibilities, including performing procedures, managing outpatient visits, providing inpatient care, teaching trainees, and contributing to scholarly initiatives. In addition to superb practice skills, our ideal candidate would possess strong leadership, vision, and interpersonal abilities essential to building a successful clinical practice in the Houston community.

The Department of Interventional Radiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the largest Interventional Radiology groups in the country and is focused exclusively on serving the needs of cancer patients. Our breadth of procedures spans both oncology and non-oncology spheres. In addition to performing procedures at IR-dedicated facilities at the Texas Medical Center, we also perform procedures at two outpatient HALS in West Houston and The Woodlands. Our research program is well-funded and includes a dedicated preclinical laboratory for translational experiments equipped with a state-of-the-art hybrid CT and angiography system, as well as dedicated research staff to facilitate clinical studies. We train the next generation of leaders in Interventional Radiology through an independent IR residency program, an advanced Interventional Oncology fellowship, and participation in the joint integrated IR-DR residency program with the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Medical degree

Board certification by the American Board of Radiology within five years of hire

CAQ certified (or eligible if a recent graduate) in Interventional Radiology

Licensure by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners or Faculty Temporary License

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Experience

Required:

  • At least 2 years' experience as Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a
  • Clinician
  • Clinical scientist or
  • GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residences or fellowships)
  • Post residency training in Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
  • Has taken steps to initiate education activities including mentoring
  • Shows evidence of excellence in clinical care and performance
  • Shows evidence of ability to develop an essential role in patient care services
  • Demonstrates potential for institutional service
  • Shows promise for effective participation in teams as appropriate for this role
