Assistant Professor in Fine Arts: Artificial Intelligence and Artistic Practice
The College of Fine Arts invites applications and nominations for an accomplished artist and arts pedagogue to join the faculty. We seek a tenure-track faculty member whose creative practice adopts artificial intelligence technologies to produce artistic objects and/or environments. Area of creative practice is open to any art form in the visual and performing arts on offer in the college (studio art, theatre, dance, music, and/or design). We are especially interested in artists with substantial media integration into object-based installations or live performance settings (e.g. immersive and projection technologies; intermedia performance; installation art; large data informed art). An ability to think and practice broadly across art genres while sustaining a focused practice of national impact is key to the success of this position.
This position is part of a broader effort at The University of Texas at Austin to advance knowledge and practical integration of artificial intelligence technologies across the campus and a college-level effort to address the significant ways artificial intelligence is transforming artistic practice and research about the arts and design fields. The ideal candidate will impart training and mentorship in their area of creative practice while offering broader technical training to artists and designers across the college and the university on the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for art making. Integration of appropriate historical, critical, and ethical perspectives on artificial intelligence will be crucial to the successful integration of technology to the creative fields. The selected candidate will assume a tenure-track line position in one of four departmental units in the college (Art and Art History; Design; Theatre and Dance; or the Butler School of Music) but will be charged with developing curricula of service to the entire college. Candidates should also expect to collaborate with colleagues in the Moody College of Communication and the School of Architecture, while inhabiting an arts-specific home in the College of Fine Arts. This position requires relocation to Austin, TX. Salary is commensurate with experience. The start date is August 2026. QualificationsCandidates are expected to hold a terminal degree in their respective discipline (e.g. MFA, PhD, DMA) from an accredited institution. The candidate will also show a record of performance or exhibition demonstrating viability towards nationally or internationally significant contributions to their field. Demonstrated proficiency in technology integration into arts practice and pedagogy and evidence of leading successful collaborative efforts in the arts will be key. Prior experience and demonstrated proficiency in teaching and mentoring students at graduate and undergraduate levels are preferred. The University is committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all persons and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, or veteran status in employment, educational programs and activities, and admissions.
