The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The Physician Assistant is responsible for the health care for a group of persons living at the State Supported Living Center. The Physician Assistant will conduct complete physicals, provide treatment, write summaries, and counsel individuals. Prescribe medication on a case-by-case basis. Responsibilities include the provision of preventive care, ordering laboratory tests, analyzing the results and referral to specialists as required. The Physician Assistant will complete documentation related to health care and communicate with interdisciplinary team members including the individual and his/her family. Provides treatment to HHS employees injured in course and scope of employment. Works under the supervision of the Medical Director and/or other supervising physicians. The Physician Assistant works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs):
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.
Provides medical services, diagnosis and treatment to assigned caseload following accepted medical practice under the supervision of a physician. Services include provision of daily assessments to individuals, completion of physicals, medical examinations, including diagnosis, treatment and a plan of care with documentation of the acute issue, assessing injuries, performing therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, ordering laboratory tests, analyzing test results and/or referrals to hospital or specialist as required.
Provides comprehensive medical diagnosis, care and treatment, to include conducting rounds, review of infirmary and hospitalized patient and on-call cases for status of condition under treatment.
Provides medical diagnosis and review of the treatment plan for the Individual Service Plan, toinclude a review of identified medical risks of the individual, as well as their health status, and ensures necessary supports (OT/PT/Nursing/etc.) have been identified and appropriate areas of need are being addressed. May prescribe medications as necessary.
Develops accurate and timely documentation, which includes dictation of annual summaries and pre- and post-procedural histories and physicals, documentation of specialty medical consultation, physical and chemical restraints, and all acute and chronic patient care.
Provides treatment to HHS employees injured in course and scope of employment.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of methods and procedures in the field of general medicine and of the principle of the development, implementation and documentation of individualized care and treatment plans. Knowledge of medical jurisprudence.
Knowledge of or ability to learn ICF/IID standards, certification requirements for the Council on Quality and Leadership, and HHSC policies and procedures.
Skill in the care and treatment of patients and in the use of medical diagnostic and treatment tools and equipment.
Ability to examine, diagnose and treat physical or mental disorders, to interpret laboratory analyses and x-rays; and to prepare and supervise preparation of case histories and medical records.
Ability to evaluate patients and implement an effective course of treatment in coordination with other interdisciplinary personnel.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain required Medical Education hours.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications:
Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas. Must practice under the supervision of one or more supervising physicians, and if prescribing drugs, must have a prescriptive delegation agreement with their supervising physician(s). Must have current registration certificates from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Must possess a National Provider Identifier (NPI#) as defined by Medicare Part B and enroll as a Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider.
Initial Screening Criteria:
Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program with a degree as a Physician Assistant.
Experience in working with a treatment team.
Experience with polypharmacy
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
