Blood Donor Technician - Mobile Blood Drives

The Donor Operations department at MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a critical role in supporting patient care by ensuring a safe and reliable blood supply through donor recruitment and collection. Through community-based mobile blood drives and on-site collection programs, the department connects generous donors with the lifesaving needs of patients undergoing cancer treatment.

As a Blood Donor Technician focused on mobile blood drives , you will be an essential part of a team that travels to community and organizational locations to collect blood donations. You will perform donor screening, venipuncture, and post-donation care in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring donor safety, regulatory compliance, and a positive donation experience. Your work directly contributes to maintaining the blood supply that supports complex cancer treatments and transfusion needs.

In this role, you will assist with the operational setup and breakdown of mobile donor collection sites, including loading, transporting, and preparing equipment and supplies required for blood drives. You will maintain assigned equipment, accurately complete donor documentation, and ensure quality control processes are followed to support regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.

You will remain knowledgeable of departmental policies, procedures, and safety protocols, reporting donor reactions, adverse events, or non-routine situations according to established guidelines. Attention to detail and adherence to regulatory standards are essential to ensuring donor safety and maintaining high-quality collection practices.

Customer service is a central component of this position. As a frontline representative of the donor program, you will interact with donors, community partners, and colleagues with professionalism and respect. You will actively help recruit donors at collection sites, provide a welcoming environment, and support a positive donation experience through strong communication and compassionate care.

Working closely with the donor operations team, you will help maintain efficient workflow at mobile collection events, assist colleagues when needed, and contribute feedback to improve processes and donor experiences. You will also maintain required competencies, licensure, and continuing education to ensure ongoing proficiency in donor collection procedures.

**The hours for this position are centered around mobile blood drives with hours from the early morning to later evenings along with weekends. More will be discussed in the interview. The ideal candidate will have prior mobile blood drive experience.**

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performs all Donor Operations Processes according to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
- Performs pre-donation screening, venipuncture, and post venipuncture care of donors in accordance with policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Remains knowledgeable of all policies, procedures and protocols.
- Complies with existing policies, procedures and protocols including requirements as specified in the Safety Program.
- Reports any requested donor results, reactions, and adverse events according to SOP.
- Ensures quality control data is accurate, complete, and documented accordingly.
- Adheres to all safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintains upkeep of assigned departmental equipment.
- Assists with the loading, unloading, set-up, and tear-down of equipment at mobile donor collection locations.
- Accurately and legibly completes donor records in a timely manner.
- Identifies and addresses non-routine situations arising during phlebotomy procedures and reports them to appropriate leadership.
- Maintains an acceptable level of proficiency and competency.
- Assists other team members in maintaining smooth workflow and processes.
- Actively recruits donors at donor sites.

Manages all customer service interactions with diplomacy, actively facilitating resolutions to problems and addressing the needs of clients both internal and external.
- Demonstrates strong level of customer service skills and customer service focus.
- Embraces the roles and responsibilities of the Customer Service Program.
- Ensures all encounters, verbal, written and silent (body language), with internal and external customers are professional and respectful.

Participates in procedures, policies and tools to enhance donor environment functioning while ensuring a positive experience for all involved.
- Utilizes the ten-foot rule, greeting everyone in a professional and respectful manner.
- Provides feedback when deficiencies or discrepancies in process performance are observed. Offers recommendations for process improvement.
- Ensures individual competency requirements are maintained including required licensures and continuing education.

Education

Required:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent

Preferred:
• Associate's Degree from a Medical Laboratory Technician Program OR
• Completion of a specialized phlebotomy training program

Work Experience

Required:
• Completion of a MD Anderson phlebotomy internship or six months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory OR
• With preferred education, only three months of phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory required

Licenses and Certifications

Required:
• TDL - Texas Drivers License: Class A, B, or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried (within 90 Days)
• Good driving record as verified with the Texas Department of Transportation (Upon Hire)

Preferred (upon hire):
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) AND
• CPT - Phlebotomy Technician Certification: American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) OR
• DPT-ASCP - Donor Phlebotomy Technician: Donor Phlebotomy certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist Board of Registry (BOR) OR
• American Certification Agency (ACA) OR
• National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
