Surgical Technician
Job Title: Surgical Technologist Department: OR Reports To: Director of Surgical Services FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Date 12/1/2022 Position Summary The Surgical Tech is responsible for providing expert preoperative patient care through the use of equipment and instrumentation. This position functions as a scrub assistant to the physician performing operative and / or invasive procedures. Works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and as outlined in the Surgical Technologist Skills Inventory; uses knowledge / expertise to act as a role model and resource for other staff. * Essential Duties & Responsibilities Supports goals of unit and facilitates unit operations by serving as a resource specialist for an assigned operating room area/specialty service.
- Maintains sterile field throughout all surgical procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of aseptic technique, advanced surgical techniques and practice of patient care techniques for all clients undergoing elective and emergency situations; performs duties in an expert manner according to the age/needs of the patient/population served.
- Verifies functioning and adequate availability of supplies / instruments / equipments prior to the surgical procedure as indicated by the surgeon’s preference card and other available resources; demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner that provices for optimal patient care in the OR.
- Ensures safe care to patients adhering to policies, procedures, and standards of care, within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, and accuracy of practice.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory / continuing education, skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
- Scrubs arms and hands according to established protocol, assist the surgical team with scrubbing in gowns and gloves, pass surgical instruments to surgeons as needed before, during and after procedures. Anticipate surgeon needs, handle specimens obtained for laboratory analysis, count sponges, needles, and instruments before, during and after procedures.
- Following surgeries ensure all specimens are passed off to the registered nurse and ensure that all instrumentation is properly contained and taken to decontamination area.
- Check all equipment for working order and report or correct unsafe conditions. Inspect emergency equipment and supplies for condition and quantity.
- Clean, organize, and restock the operating room, sterile core, and non-sterile supply room between cases or in available time.
- Supply and label all fluids and local anesthetics, and any or all drugs on the field.
- Assist with transporting of patients when needed.
- Will be required to take on-call and work after the regular schedule as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Maintain confidentiality of patient related issues and adhering to all HIPAA rules and regulations.

- Attend all required meetings and in-service education
- Remain flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participates in temporary assignments
- Compliance with attendance standards
- Demonstrate flexibility when changes in assignments are necessary
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program and current certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) or grandfathered
- Has 2-3 years experience as a surgical technologist and or demonstrated competence in 5 or more surgical specialties.
- Demonstrate clinical competency within all specialty areas and clinical expertise in a specified number of specialty areas, as determined by the individual facility needs.
LANGUAGE/MATH/REASONING ABILITY
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization
- Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
