What We Look For In a High School Reading Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of critical reading strategies, literary analysis, informational and argumentative text analysis, vocabulary building, text complexity navigation, and evidence‑based reasoning. Ability to explain how to analyze author purpose, evaluate argument validity, interpret figurative language, and synthesize multiple texts while preparing high school students for AP courses, SAT/ACT reading sections, and college readiness.

Guides students through interpreting poetry and prose, evaluating rhetorical strategies in nonfiction, identifying logical fallacies in arguments, and synthesizing ideas across multiple sources. Emphasizes developing independent critical reading skills and connects reading analysis to persuasive writing and informed citizenship.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with high school reading standards and common challenges such as comprehending archaic or complex language, analyzing unfamiliar text genres, and sustaining focus on extended readings. Adapts instruction using diverse text selections, scaffolded annotation guides, and discussion‑based analysis to support high school readers from struggling to advanced levels building toward college‑level textual analysis.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
