What to Expect

As Senior Counsel, Commercial , you will provide expert legal services and guidance on complex commercial trading and origination matters that have a significant impact on operations and strategy. You'll work closely with senior leaders and internal clients, serving as a trusted advisor and business partner. Your work will involve high-stakes issues where precedents may not exist, requiring creative legal strategies and immediate, experience-based judgment. You'll help drive business success while ensuring compliance and managing risk in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do

  • Provide advice and counsel to the natural gas and power trading desks and other commercial stakeholders.
  • Draft and advise on a wide range of trading, storage, and transportation agreements, including PPAs and contracts on the NAESB, ISDA, EEI and WSPP forms.
  • Provide counsel on the structuring and negotiation of long-term origination deals and other complex commercial arrangements supporting trading and commercial strategy.
  • Provide authoritative legal advice on complex or ambiguous matters, interpreting and applying company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Draft, review, and edit a wide range of legal documents, tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Manage relationships with internal clients, acting as a strategic business partner and deploying resources to support business objectives.
  • Instruct and manage outside counsel and specialists.
  • Recommend and implement changes to policies, processes, and standards to improve operational support and ensure compliance.
  • Monitor, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, and industry best practices, maintaining up-to-date expertise through continuous professional development.
  • Lead or contribute to major and unique legal assignments of significant importance.
  • Develop and deliver clear, compelling communications and presentations to various stakeholders.
  • Build and sustain high levels of professional credibility and mutual trust across the organization.
  • Lead and manage significant commercial disputes, including strategy development, cost-effective use of outside counsel, and risk assessment for matters with material business impact.
  • Provide guidance and informal mentorship to junior attorneys and legal professionals.
What You'll Bring (Required Qualifications)

  • Legally authorized to work in job posting country
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Member in good standing of any US bar
  • 6+ years of relevant legal experience in energy law or as in-house counsel at a large energy company

  • Strong preference for natural gas and power markets experience.
  • Expertise advising on contractual terms in the trading of energy commodities
  • Experience advising on commercial disputes
  • Strong negotiation, advocacy, and presentation skills, with mature judgment and discretion
  • Ability to work independently under pressure, meet deadlines, and function with minimal supervision
  • Experience managing disputes with significant business impact
  • Strategic mindset with a sophisticated grasp of business drivers and the ability to align legal strategies with organizational goals
  • Advanced skills leveraging technology for efficient legal practice
  • Strong ability to manage complexity, analyze ambiguous situations, and develop effective solutions
  • Proven track record of building trust through honesty, integrity, and authenticity
Compensation Range


This position has a base salary range of $204,300 - $249,700.00
