Essential Functions

Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications, the Media Relations and Content Manager plays a key role in shaping The University of Texas Permian Basin's public voice and brand through strategic media outreach and engaging digital content. This position leads the University's social media content strategy from planning and creation to publishing and community management.

The role also serves as the central point of contact for external media, overseeing incoming media requests and coordinating University responses. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and creative storyteller with a strong understanding of digital trends, audience engagement, and brand voice. This individual thrives in a fast-paced environment, is highly organized, and excels at translating complex topics into compelling, accessible content. This is an on-site role based in Odessa, Texas.

1. Lead the planning, development, and execution of content across all official UTPB social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube, etc.).

2. Create and publish engaging multimedia content including writing captions, capturing photos, and editing short-form video for mobile-first platforms such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Facebook.

3. Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries and interview requests; coordinate logistics, deliver media assets, and ensure timely responses.

4. Develop and maintain a consistent social media calendar aligned with strategic University goals, events, and timely digital trends.

5. Monitor, moderate, and engage with online audiences to strengthen community relationships and reinforce a positive University image.

6. Draft and distribute media advisories, press releases, and official University statements as needed.

7. Utilize design and video editing tools such as Canva, CapCut, InShot, Adobe Express, or similar platforms to produce high-quality digital content.

8. Collaborate with University departments and stakeholders to source and amplify relevant stories across platforms.

9. Support storytelling efforts through blogs, newsletters, and student, faculty, and alumni profiles.

10. Partner with the Creative Director to ensure brand consistency and visually engaging communications.

11. Assist with timely updates to the University website, particularly for news, events, or marketing content.

12. Manage and grow the University's student influencer program to expand peer-driven digital engagement.

13. Stay current on trends in digital media, platform updates, and best practices in content strategy.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.

2. One (1) year of experience in social media content creation, media relations, or a similar communications role.

3. Demonstrated ability to manage professional social media accounts for a brand, organization, or institution.

4. Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills for both digital and traditional formats.

5. Proficiency with social media management tools such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or Later.

6. Experience with design/video tools such as Canva, CapCut, Adobe Express, or InShot.

7. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to detail.

8. Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience working in a higher education or nonprofit communications setting.

2. Familiarity with SEO principles and website content management systems

3. Understanding of higher education brand positioning and voice.

4. Experience mentoring student workers or interns in a communications or marketing capacity.

Schedule

Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Hours worked may differ with some departments.

Standard Working Conditions

1. Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
2. Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
3. Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
4. Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
5. Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
6. Standard working conditions may differ depending on department and occupation
